Countdown to Earth Day: Shop Sustainably

Countdown to Earth Day: Shop Sustainably

One huge way that you can sustainable and environmentally friendly is through the toys that you buy for your dog. Whether your dog shreds through toys like a wildfire or takes care of their toys, you can find sustainable brands that your dog will love!

There are several ways that pet products can be environmentally friendly, and oftentimes, they don’t cost too much more than a regular toy would cost.

Using recycled materials. Think of all those plastic bones, handles, and other plastic objects on your dog’s toys. What if, instead of regular plastic, they were made out of 100 percent recycled plastic? That would be just another dent in our overuse of plastic and help keep unused plastic out of the ocean. Also, think of the stuffing inside toys. What if they were also made from recycled plastic? The amount of waste continues to get smaller.

Using natural materials. Instead of using materials like plastic or synthetic fabrics, some companies are using natural materials like hemp. Hemp is the strongest plant fiber, meaning it will hold up for your dog. Also, since it is made from completely natural materials, toys made like this can be compostable. No need for additional waste in the landfills if you can just let it naturally disintegrate.

Shopping at companies that donate. There are many companies that will donate a percentage of their profits to non-profit organizations. One example would be WoofPack Trails, which is donating 10 percent of profits to the Humane Society of Summit County (HSSC) if you use the code HSSC when you checkout! Also, if you raise $100 between April 14 and April 21 for their Paws for a Cause Virtual Walk, you will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Starbucks gift card and a WoofPack!

There are a lot of ways that you can help the environment as a dog owner, and this is just one of them. I challenge you to look closer at the toys you buy next time you’re at the pet store. Think about the process behind making these toys and what you are supporting with your money. Supporting the earth through the different things we buy and use can be one of the best investments we make.
